About the Author Arthur Kendal Whitehead was born July 31, 1913 in San Francisco, California. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1939 with a commission into the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. Whitehead's first duty station was Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas where he met and fell in love with Martha Jane Bliss. Whitey, as he was called, was assigned to the 26th Cavalry (P.S.) at Fort Stotsenburg, Philippines in December 1940. Whitey's experiences in the Philippines from 1941 to 1943 are told in this book. Colonel John Olson of the Philippine Scout Heritage Society recently reviewed and verified all of Whitey's experiences. Whitey married Martha Jane Bliss in April 1944, three months after his sail to Australia. He was promoted to major in 1944, had a career in the Army for 23 years, and retired as a lieutenant colonel. His duty stations included Belgrade, Yugoslavia; the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.; and Ft. Shafter, Hawaii. Whitey retired in Tucson, AZ, with his three children. He liked to fish, hike, hunt, and spend time with his family, which grew to include five grandchildren. Whitey passed away February 8, 2000. |
